On Purpose

In light of my wife, Rebekah’s, current health situation and difficulties, here are the abridged notes to a message that God laid on my heart and allowed me to preach yesterday that was convicting and helpful to me. Hope it’s a blessing.

Title: On Purpose

Ruth 2:15-16 And when she was risen up to glean, Boaz commanded his young men, saying, Let her glean even among the sheaves, and reproach her not: And let fall also some of the handfuls of purpose for her, and leave them, that she may glean them, and rebuke her not.

1. God BROUGHT Me/You Here on Purpose

Ruth 1:19-21 So they two went until they came to Bethlehem. And it came to pass, when they were come to Bethlehem, that all the city was moved about them, and they said, Is this Naomi? And she said unto them, Call me not Naomi, call me Mara: for the Almighty hath dealt very bitterly with me. I went out full, and the LORD hath brought me home again empty: why then call ye me Naomi, seeing the LORD hath testified against me, and the Almighty hath afflicted me?

I’m being sarcastic, but, obviously, God didn’t have a plan for why he allowed Naomi to go through those heartaches, right?

Of course, He knew what he was doing!

- Where you are is no mistake!

- God isn’t surprised by your circumstances!

- God knows exactly what my wife deals with, and friend, he knows what you are dealing with as well!

God knows exactly what you are going through and nothing has ever surprised Him! REMEMBER, He is the One that brought you here!

Psalms 40:2 He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.

The verse above is of course not about Jeremiah but it reminds of Jeremiah’s ordeal in the pit. We must understand that God was in control not only when Jeremiah was lifted out of the pit, but also as he was lowered down. God loves, cares for, and watches over you with a greater plan in mind, even when you feel “the LORD hath brought me home again empty”

Jeremiah 1:5 Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.

I love this verse as it’s often applied to the importance of recognizing the worth of the unborn, but you do realize that the verse doesn’t say that God knows us when we are in the belly, He knows us before we are ever formed in anyway. We have personhood and a plan from God before we EVER are even the tiniest blip on an ultrasound screen!

2. God Has BLESSED Me/You on Purpose

Ruth 2:15-16 And when she was risen up to glean, Boaz commanded his young men, saying, Let her glean even among the sheaves, and reproach her not: And let fall also some of the handfuls of purpose for her, and leave them, that she may glean them, and rebuke her not.

Boaz made sure Ruth was blessed on purpose. There was no accident.

Ezra 9:8 And now for a little space grace hath been shewed from the LORD our God, to leave us a remnant to escape, and to give us a nail in his holy place, that our God may lighten our eyes, and give us a little reviving in our bondage.

Heard a great thought from Bro. Scott Pauley recently: The reason Ezra only asked for a little bit was not a lack of faith or an oversight. It was because if only a little bit of God shows up, big things happen. He is so powerful, the tiniest bit of His glory can shake the whole situation up.

Ephesians 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:

3. God BOUGHT Me/You on Purpose

This is a long section of verses, but if you have made it this far, give the verses below a moment to sink in as you read. Boaz took in this Moabiteish woman. He was willing to “mar his inheritance” for the sake of redemption. Also, note, he wanted to buy all of the land that belonged to Naomi’s husband and sons. Aren’t you glad God wanted all of us!? Not just a select few like our misguided Reformed friends would have you believe?

Ruth 4:1-10 Then went Boaz up to the gate, and sat him down there: and, behold, the kinsman of whom Boaz spake came by; unto whom he said, Ho, such a one! turn aside, sit down here. And he turned aside, and sat down. And he took ten men of the elders of the city, and said, Sit ye down here. And they sat down. And he said unto the kinsman, Naomi, that is come again out of the country of Moab, selleth a parcel of land, which was our brother Elimelech's: And I thought to advertise thee, saying, Buy it before the inhabitants, and before the elders of my people. If thou wilt redeem it, redeem it: but if thou wilt not redeem it, then tell me, that I may know: for there is none to redeem it beside thee; and I am after thee. And he said, I will redeem it. Then said Boaz, What day thou buyest the field of the hand of Naomi, thou must buy it also of Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of the dead, to raise up the name of the dead upon

his inheritance. And the kinsman said, I cannot redeem it for myself, lest I mar mine own inheritance: redeem thou my right to thyself; for I cannot redeem it. Now this was the manner in former time in Israel concerning redeeming and concerning changing, for to confirm all things; a man plucked off his shoe, and gave it to his neighbour: and this was a testimony in Israel. Therefore the kinsman said unto Boaz, Buy it for thee. So he drew off his shoe. And Boaz said unto the elders, and unto all the people, Ye are witnesses this day, that I have bought all that was Elimelech's, and all that was Chilion's and Mahlon's, of the hand of Naomi. Moreover Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon, have I purchased to be my wife, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance, that the name of the dead be not cut off from among his brethren, and from the gate of his place: ye are witnesses this day.

Jesus was not just kicking tires when He came down to become a God/man!

He had weighed out the price...

He had done his shopping...

He decided, I’ll take the whole lot...

1 Corinthians 6:20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.

If He Bought you, that means that:

- We are the OBJECT of His love

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

- He OWNS us

Ephesians 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

- He doesn’t OWE you

Job 41:11 Who hath prevented me, that I should repay him? whatsoever is under the whole heaven is mine.

I am so glad that God knows our frame. I’m glad He brought me to where I am. And greater still, He is going to take me further on! I so appreciate His purposeful blessings, though I should still thank Him more. And I am so proud that He bought ME! That means that I’m his!!

Hope this thought was a small help to someone the way it was to me.
